HOUSTON - It will be an all Baylor final in the doubles bracket in the 9th Annual Rice/Downtown Club at the Met Collegiate Indoor Invitational in Houston on Sunday. In addition, Michal Kokta advanced to the championship match of the singles competition.
Kokta, a junior, teamed with Will Ward to defeat Texas A&M-CC's Raul Morant-Rivas and Jose Zunino, 8-6, in quarterfinal action, then proceeded to claim victory over the tournament's top-seeded duo Brett Joelson and Brian Wooten of Texas A&M, 8-4, to claim a spot in the finals. On the other side of the bracket, Baylor's freshman tandem of Matt Brown and David Galic advanced to the semifinals after Texas A&M's Marcus Lunt and Jerry Makowski withdrew due to injury. The BU duo won the right to face Kokta and Ward by defeating Clemson's Clint Boling and UTA's Niels Buksik, 8-2.
Quarterfinal singles action was the first competition of the day for the players. Kokta posted victories over a pair of Ohio State players Chris Klingeman, 6-0, 7-5 and Bryan Koniecko, 6-3, 7-6. He will face Rice's Ralph Knupfer in the championship match. Ward lost in the quarterfinals to Clemson's Clement Reix, 6-3, 6-3.
The singles championship match is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday while doubles action is slated for noon.
