WACO, Texas - Baylor women's tennis' outstanding freshman Zuzana Zemenova was named Big 12 Players of the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year and sophomore Zuzana Cerna earned Newcomer of the Year honors to give Baylor a sweep of conference awards the league office announced on Monday. It marks the first time in Big 12 women's tennis history that one school has swept all three player honors.
Zemenova who hails from Kosice, Slovakia, is the first women's tennis competitor from Baylor to earn Player of the Year recognition. The freshman has played at No. 1 singles all year for BU, she posted a 9-0 mark in Big 12 matches, is 20-3 in dual matches this spring and 22-4 on the season. She is also the first player in league annals to win women's tennis player and rookie honors in the same year. Zemenova is ranked 23rd nationally, sixth among freshmen.
Cerna, a sophomore from Prague, Czech Republic, is the first Baylor athlete since 1997 (Barbara Navarro) to be named the top women's newcomer. Cerna is 22-10 on the season and is 15-7 in dual match play. She completed Big 12 play with a 7-2 mark playing at the No. 1 through No. 4 spots for the Lady Bears.
Nebraska's Scott Jacobson was named Big 12 Coach of the Year.
Zemenova also was named All-Big 12 in singles and Cerna and Daniela Covello, currently ranked No.13, were All-Big 12 selections in doubles.
