AUSTIN, Texas - For the fourth straight year, Baylor's men's tennis team won both the regular season and Big 12 Tournament championships. The Bears defeated Oklahoma State in the 2005 tournament championship 4-1 on Sunday at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The victory raised the Bears' record to 28-0 and extended their school-record win streak to 52 matches while Oklahoma State dropped to 12-9.
In doubles, Oklahoma State's duo of Tomas Bohunicky and Artsem Burmistrau got on the board first with a win at court three over Benjamin Becker and Vladimir Portnov, 8-3. However, Baylor then swept courts one and two to gain the doubles point. Lars Poerschke and Michal Kokta posted an 8-6 win over 47th-ranked Boris Kuharic and Felipe Diaz of OSU and Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga triumphed over Daniel Byrnes and Mark Van Elden 8-5.
Oklahoma State's lone point of the match came when Bohunicky defeated Poerschke at No. 3, 6-4, 6-3. Kokta was first off the court in singles with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Burmistrau. At the top spot Dorsch avenged an earlier loss when he whipped Van Elden, 6-1, 6-1. Van Elden beat Dorsch in three sets on March 19. Baylor's final point of the match came when Becker beat Kuharic 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
"It was a great win for us. Every year is a new year and we have a couple of young guys that have never experienced this. It's a big deal, something special," said head coach Matt Knoll.
Benedikt Dorsch was named the tournament's most outstanding performer.
