TRINITY, Texas -
On a tough scoring day, the Baylor men's golf team dropped one spot into seventh with a score of 308 on the second day of action Saturday at the Big 12 Championships at the 7,330 yard, par-72 Whispering Pines Golf Club.
First-round leader sophomore Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) followed his 67 with an 80 and dropped into a tie for 10th. Starting the round from the 10th tee, Alcorn got off to a tough start by bogeying three of the first four holes with a birdie mixed in. He was only 3-over after nine but took double bogeys on both of the par-fives, holes two and five on his back nine. Alcorn was 3-under par on those two holes Friday.
Sophomore Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) fired a 75 to move up to ninth to lead the Bears at 146. Thomas started the round with a birdie on 10 and was even-par through nine. Bogeys on hole four, five and eight gave him a 3-over par score to go with his 1-under par 71 Friday.
Redshirt freshman Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) shot a 79 and is tied with sophomore teammate Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas), who shot a 76, for 51st at 160. Meck was 2-under with birdies on 12 and 13, but triple bogeys on 16 and 18 put him 5-over on the front nine. He birdied three and seven, but four bogeys on the back nine put him at 7-over. Turnquist birdied 11 and 17 and was 2-over through nine. After a slow start at the turn, he was par or better on the last seven holes, including a birdie on five.
Sophomore Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) birdied 14 and was also 2-over after nine, but finished at 6-over par 78.
Oklahoma State extended its lead with a 296 for a total of 581 and is now seven strokes ahead of Oklahoma (588). Missouri (592), Texas A&M (602) and Kansas (607) round out the top five. Oklahoma teammates Anthony Kim and Justin Fraley lead the individual competition at 4-under par 140. Kansas State's Matt VanCleave is one stroke back in third, while Oklahoma State's Alex Noren is in fourth at 142, followed by teammate Tyler Leon in fifth at 143.
Saturday's conditions were tough, as only two players recorded scores under par and no one had a sub-70 round.
The championships conclude with the third and final round Sunday. The teams tee off at 8 a.m. and 8:50 a.m.
