STILLWATER, Okla. - Baylor's women's tennis team claimed its first outright conference title with a 7-0 blanking of Oklahoma State on Saturday at OSU's DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater.
For the first time in the program's history, the Bears breezed through Big 12 play undefeated with an 11-0 record. The title is Baylor's second women's tennis Big 12 championship, the Lady Bears and Texas A&M were co-champions in 2003. Baylor, ranked No. 14 in the latest ITA Poll raised its season record to 20-4, reaching the 20-win mark for just the third time in school history. Baylor posted a 22-7 record in 2001 and was 22-5 in 2000. Oklahoma State fell to 8-14 on the season and completes league play at 4-7.
Baylor quickly got on the scoreboard when the doubles tandems at Nos. 2 and 3 both posted 8-2 wins. Carolin Walter and Carolin Korsawe, teamed for the second straight match, defeated OSU's Sandra Blajer at No. 2 and Zuzana Krchnakova and Zuzana Cerna downed the Cowgirls' Jennifer Poskitt and Lauren Simmons at No. 3. To complete the sweep on doubles, Klara Zrustova and Zuzana Zemenova defeated Zana Masnic and Iryna Tkachenko, 8-4 at the top spot.
The Lady Bears dominated singles play winning all six matches in just two sets. After Cerna defeated Masnic on court two, 6-0, 6-2 and Iva Mihaylova beat Blajer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6, Zrustova clinched the match for BU with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Poskitt at court four. With the win, Zrustova remained undefeated in Big 12 action at 9-0. Krchnakova notched her 24th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Collins at No. 5. Zemenova also raised her Big 12 record to 9-0 with her win over Tkachenko at No. 1, 6-0, 6-3. On court three, Carolin Walter rallied from a 4-5 first set deficit to win 7-5 then posted a 6-4 win in the second over Simmons to complete play for the day.
Next up for Baylor is the Big 12 Tournament in Austin, Texas, April 28-May 1. Baylor, the tournament's top seed will have a first round bye.
