LUBBOCK, Texas - The top-ranked Baylor men's tennis team defeated No. 9 Texas Tech 7-0, Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center on the Texas Tech campus. The Bears are now 24-0 overall, 6-0 in conference.
Baylor got on the board first by taking the doubles point from the Red Raiders. Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke, the 53rd-ranking doubles duo, defeated Esat Tanik and Adrian Prpic 8-4 on the No. 2 court. Benjamin Becker and Jon Reckewey took the second doubles match 8-4 to clinch the point for the Bears. The No. 1 court did not finish.
The Bears controlled singles play on courts one through six by taking victories on every court.
No. 21 Lars Poerschke grabbed his 32nd win of the season by defeating Jakob Paulson of Texas Tech 6-0, 7-5. The freshman leads the team in wins, and has a three-match winning streak in progress.
Matija Zgaga extended his team-high winning streak to nine matches, taking the win in the fifth court for Baylor. Zgaga defeated Michael Innerebner 7-5, 6-3 to grab his 23rd win of the season.
Texas Tech falls to 21-2, 3-2 conference with Saturday's defeat. The loss ends a four-match winning streak, which catapulted the Red Raiders into the No. 9 ranking spot, the highest for the men's team in school history.
Baylor returns home on Tuesday to host Texas A&M at the Baylor Tennis Center. The match is season finale for the Bears before post-season play. Match time is has been changed to 7 p.m. for television purposes.
