WACO, Texas - After losing the doubles point, the top-ranked Baylor men's tennis team swept the singles to defeat No. 50 SMU 6-1, Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor improves to 22-0 on the season, and grabs its 46th-consecutive win dating back to last season. SMU slips to 13-10, breaking a three-match winning steak.
The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead after taking two of three from the Bears in doubles action. Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier upset No. 4 Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga on the first court 8-4. The loss ends a three-match winning streak by the Baylor duo, dropping the tandem to 14-4. SMU clinched the doubles point by taking the match on the second court from Vladimir Portnov and Lars Poerschke 8-5.
The Bears quickly took the lead in singles play by taking the first-two matches from the Mustangs on courts one and two. No. 1 Dorsch gave Baylor its first point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over McNaughton in the first court. No. 28 Benjamin Becker followed suit just moments later by taking the point from Gwinyai Chingoka 6-3, 6-2 to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
No. 21 Poerschke extended Baylor's lead to 3-1 after defeating Murgier 6-3, 6-0. The win is the 10th of the like for Poerschke in the third court this season, and he improves to 30-10 overall.
Zgaga clinched the win for Baylor by defeating Peter Oredsson 6-4, 6-4 on the fourth court to give the Bears their fourth point. Tonight's effort marks the seven-consecutive win for Zgaga dating back to March 18.
Baylor returns to action on Wednesday as the Bears travel to Austin for a Big 12 match up against Texas. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m. CST.
