ENNIS, Texas - Top-ranked Baylor men's tennis defeated No. 2 Virginia 4-3 Sunday, after rain forced the two teams to travel to the Ennis Colonial Racquet & Fitness Club to complete the match.
The dual match started in unorthodox fashion with singles play. The Bears and the Cavaliers took three points apiece in singles action, using the doubles point as a tiebreaker.
Michal Kokta gave the Bears their first point on the day in the fourth court over No. 85 Marko Miklo. With Baylor leading 1-0, rain forced a stoppage in play and both teams traveled an hour-and-a-half north to Ennis.
After the delay, No. 44 Benjamin Becker won the first match for the Bears on the second court. The win ended a two-match skid for Becker. He had not lost two-straight matches since January 2003.
Baylor held a 3-2 advantage with one court to finish. After losing the first set to Treat Huey, No. 93 Matija Zgaga won the second to force a third. The two battled to a third-set tiebreaker, but Huey had the upper hand and took the fifth-court point to force the doubles tiebreaker.
The Bears took all-three doubles matches and the doubles point to hand Virginia (11-2) its second loss; both of the Cavaliers' losses have come against Baylor.
Baylor returns to action on Wednesday as the Bears travel to SMU. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Haggar Tennis Stadium.
