WACO, Texas - Early dominance was too much for No. 8 USC as top-ranked men's tennis defeated the Trojans 5-2 Thursday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
"We grabbed momentum in doubles and carried it through the day," Baylor head coach Matt Knoll said of the win. "The new guys still looked a little nervous which contributed to the up and down play, but beating a top-10 team like USC is great for us and we will move forward from here."
The Bears started the day taking all-three doubles matches. In No. 1 doubles, Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga handled Jamil Al-Agba and Drew Hoskins of SC, 8-3. Then on the third court, Benjamin Becker and Jon Reckewey clinched the doubles point for the Bears defeating Kaes Van't Hof and Brian Wright, 8-4.
The Bears continued to control in singles play. Zgaga took the first point for Baylor with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Van't Hof in the fifth court. Becker soon followed suit defeating No. 97 Johan Berg 6-3, 6-2, extended the Bears' lead to 3-0. After giving up a point in the fourth court, Michal Kokta defeated Adam Loucks of SC 6-4, 6-4 in the sixth court to secure the win.
Baylor's No. 11 Lars Poerschke battled No. 116 Drew Hoskins to a match tiebreaker. Poerschke won the first set 6-3, but Hoskins' late effort was enough to take the match 3-6, 7-6 (10-7).
Baylor returns to action Saturday as the Bears travel to No. 13 Kentucky. Match time is set for 1 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.
