WACO, Texas -- Baylor junior left-handed pitcher Cory VanAllen was named to the 2006 preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced Monday. Dedicated to the memory of late Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach Brooks Wallace, the award is in its third year and is given annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player.
VanAllen, a product of Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, posted an 8-4 record with a 4.02 ERA in 2005. In 19 starts, he recorded 68 strikeouts over 107.1 innings. VanAllen was 4-1 with a 3.04 ERA and a .241 opponents' batting average in nine starts against Big 12 Conference foes. He is 11-6 with a 3.89 ERA in his career at Baylor.
The Watch List will be trimmed to 12 semifinalists in late May 2006. The selection committee, comprised of coaches, media, sports information and media relations contacts, former winners and media, will narrow the list ot three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals. The winner will be announced at a banquet in Lubbock, Texas, following the College World Series; the banquet will be televised on FSN.
Baylor opens its 2006 season Feb. 10-12, hosting Stephen F. Austin for a three-game series at Baylor Ballpark.
