WACO, Texas - Baylor waited a little too long to mount a rally as the Bears dropped a 3-1 (22-30, 20-30, 30-24, 26-30) decision to No. 19 Texas in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center. Baylor junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) posted her first career double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 12 blocks and became the 10th player in Baylor history to reach 300 career blocks.
Senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) hit .333 with a team-high 13 kills and a career high eight blocks for the Bears (9-9, 1-6 Big 12). Senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) added 12 kills, while junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) and senior defensive specialist Maggie Chlebana (Calgary, Alberta) led the team with 10 digs each.
Leticia Armstrong hit .533 with a match-high 19 kills to go with six blocks for the Longhorns (11-2, 6-1). Dariam Acevedo added 16 kills, while Jen Christian and Brandy Magee each had 11. Alyson Jennings recorded a match-high 16 digs.
Texas led 13-11 in game one when it when on a 9-1 run to take a 10-point lead at 22-12. The Bears could get no closer than seven the rest of the way as Texas claimed the game, 30-22. The Longhorns hit .350 for the game, while holding the Bears to .250.
Game two was close to the midway point as well as Texas led 14-13. After the Longhorns took a timeout they scored five straight to go up 19-14 and cruised the rest of the way to take the game, 30-20. Texas hit .467 for the game, while Baylor hit only .083.
A different Baylor team came out of the locker room after the break as the Bears jumped out to a 10-4 lead. Baylor led by as much as seven on three occasions, but Texas clawed back to within three four times, the last time at 26-23. The Bears buckled down and scored four of the last five points to take the game, 30-24. Baylor hit .282 for the game, while Texas hit only .048.
The Bears carried the momentum into game four and led 9-7, but the Longhorns took over by ripping off seven straight points to go up 14-9. Texas cruised for a while until the Bears crept back within three at 25-22. The two teams sided out the rest of the way and the Longhorns clinched the match with a 30-26 decision. Texas hit .220, while Baylor hit .147.
Texas hit .255 for the match, while Baylor hit only .193. The Bears lost for the first time in nine matches this season when outdigging their opponent as they topped the Longhorns in the category, 50-49. Baylor also outblocked Texas, 14.5-10.5.
Baylor returns to action when it hosts Oklahoma Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center. The Bears are also home next weekend as they take on No. 20 Kansas State Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Ferrell Center prior to the Baylor-Nebraska football game, which kicks off at 6 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium. All fans with a ticket to the football game will be admitted to the volleyball match for free.
