HOUSTON, Texas - Benjamin Becker and Benedikt Dorsch both earned spots in the final round of the 7th Annual Met/Rice Indoor Invitational and will play each other Sunday at the Downtown Club at the Met in Houston.
Top-seeded Dorsch defeated Travis Helgeson of Texas 6-3; 6-2 in the quarterfinal round Saturday morning. Then, Dorsch handled third-seeded Robert Searle of Rice 6-1; 6-2 in the semifinals advancing to the finals.
In a head-to-head Baylor match, second-seed Becker defeated teammate Greg Shearer 7-5; 3-6; 6-1 in a tough three-set match. In the semifinals, Becker continued his winning ways as he defeated Devin Mullings of Ohio St. 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
In the back-draw quarterfinal match, Baylor's Vladimir Portnov beat Jason Mok of Rice 6-3; 6-3 advancing to the semifinals. Portnov then earned a spot in the consolation finals by beating Joey Atas of Ohio St., 6-1, 6-4. Portnov will face Gonzalo Figuereido of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday.
In Bracket-B play, Jon Reckewey stayed consistently solid defeating George Venson of Rice 6-1; 3-6; 10-8. The sophomore handled third-seeded Javier Bacaicoa of TAMU-CC 6-2; 6-2 in the quarterfinals, and Reckewey claimed a spot in the consolation finals after defeating Javier Herrera of Tyler JC 6-4, 6-2. He will face Nolan Polley of Kentucky in the finals.
Reckewey and Shearer proved victorious Saturday. The duo advanced to the quarterfinals after Joerge Barthel and Jose Rivera of Nebraska were forced to withdraw due to injury. In their quarterfinals match, the pair beat Drew Eberly and Dennis Mertens of Ohio State 8-3.
In other doubles action, Becker and Portnov fell to Devin Mullings and Dominic Ozanne of Ohio State after having to withdraw due to injury.
Injury continued to hamstring Baylor duo Matjia Zgaga and Dorsch. The team had to withdraw due to injury against Joel Reckewey and Adrian Szatmary of Nebraska in the first round of the back draw.
