THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 1 men's tennis team had a strong showing in the preliminary rounds of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup Friday and Saturday in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Baylor is the only team participating in the Sherwood Collegiate Cup not from the state of California. The field of five includes; No. 2 UCLA, No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 USC and No. 27 Pepperdine.
In the first round of action, Michal Kokta defeated David Ryan of Stanford 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Recent transfer Greg Shearer stumbled in his first match at Baylor falling to No. 4 Sam Warburg of Stanford 6-3, 6-4.
In the second round, No. 11 Lars Poerschke continued his winning ways defeating Mathieu Dehaine of UCLA 6-3, 6-3. Poerschke is schedule to face No. 62 Chris Lam of UCLA in the quarterfinals round.
