WACO, Texas - Men's tennis began fall action Friday (Sept. 24) as they hosted the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate Fall Invitational at the Baylor Tennis Facility. After the first day of action, Barry McLaren and No. 5 Matija Zgaga remain undefeated heading into day two of play on Saturday.
McLaren proved victorious in his two matches of the day in the green bracket. In the round of 32, he defeated Emilio Kirby of Lamar 6-4, 6-4 to move onto the round of 16. Later in the day he beat Nate Avila of UT-San Antonio 6-1, 6-3 to finish the day.
Zgaga won his two matches as well, defeating UT-Arlington's Alberto Agis 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 64. In his second match, he handled Adrian Prpic of Texas Tech 6-0, 6-2 advancing into Saturday.
Two Bears suffered defeats in the first day of play. Lars Poerschke won his first match against UT-Arlington's Sandy Farguharson 7-5, 7-5, but Alex Gonzales of Laredo CC defeated Poerschke 6-7, 4-6, handing him his first loss as a Bear. In his first match at Baylor, Michal Kokta lost to Andrev Kumanstov of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-6, 5-7 in the round of 64.
In doubles action, Kokta and Zgaga defeated UT-San Antonio duo Anthony Portois and Hetori Chaves 8-6 in the round of 32.
Action continues tomorrow in both singles and doubles play at the Baylor Intercollegiate. Singles play continues at 8 a.m. followed by doubles matches later in the day. For updated information on the web, go to www.usta.com. Updates will occur at noon and 5 p.m.
