WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team dealt the visiting Texas Longhorns its first conference loss of the season and junior Benjamin Becker won his 99th singles match to tie former Bear Zoltan Papp for the all-times singles win record on Wednesday evening at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Bears swept all six singles matches and won two of three doubles matches on the night.
With the victory, second-ranked Baylor raised its overall record to 20-2 and ran its conference record to 5-0 while Texas falls to 14-8 and 5-1 in league play. Baylor started the day by taking the doubles point, winning matches at courts two and three. At No. 3 doubles, Reiner Neurohr and Ivor Lovrak were the first team off the court with an 8-6 win over Texas' Will Clinton and Ryan Haymond. Just a few minutes later, Becker and Matias Marin, ranked 25th nationally, disposed of Pete Stroer and Jimmy Haney, 8-6. After falling behind 7-1 to Texas' 10th ranked doubles team of Jose Zarhi and Antonio Ruiz, 20th ranked Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga rallied to win the next three games before finally falling 8-4.
It didn't take the Bears long to decide the outcome of the match once singles got underway. Dorsch, Becker, Zgaga and Neurohr posted quick two-set victories. Zgaga, playing at No. 4 finished first, downing Joe Morris, 6-2, 6-1. Becker placed his name at the top of the Baylor record book and won his 11th straight match with a speedy 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 and Dorsch, playing at No. 1, clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ruiz. Neurohr followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Hubert Chodkiewicz and at No. 3, Matias Marin posted a 7-6(4), 6-4 win. The only match to go three sets was at No. 6 when BU's Ivor Lovrak lost the first set to Ryan Haymond 2-6, but bounced back to take the second set 6-1. The two were tied at 6-6 in the third set when Lovrak posted a 7-4 tiebreaker score to secure the win.
