The Baylor men's golf opened with a 286 in the first round, then fired a 283 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 569 to stand second after the first day of the Border Olympics hosted by Texas A&M at the 7,125-yard, par-72 Laredo Country Club.
Junior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) and freshman Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) are both tied for sixth at 140. Baca opened with a 3-under par 69, followed by a 71, while Alcorn shot a 72, then fired a 4-under 68.
Senior Will Doughtie (Amarillo, Texas) is off to a great start after struggling of late, tying for 19th at 144 (74-70), while senior Jon Antunes (Belton, Texas) is one stroke behind Doughtie, tied for 21st at 145 (71-74). Freshman Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) shot 148 (74-74) and is tied for 48th, while freshman Dusty Isabell (Athens, Texas), who is competing as an individual in his first career tournament, is 88th at 159 (79-88).
The Bears trail first-place SMU (282-276=558) by 11 strokes, but lead third-place BYU (290-282=572) by three. San Diego State (287-286=573) and Lamar (289-285=574) round out the top 5.
SMU's Jerad Harklau leads the tournament at 134 (65-69), two strokes ahead of Colorado State's Martin Cairo (68-68=136).
The tournament continues with the third and final round Saturday morning.
