WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team, 2004 NCAA champions, has accepted Texas Governor Rick Perry's invitation to visit with him at the State Capitol in Austin.
The Bears will meet with Governor Perry on Monday, Oct. 11 at 2:35 p.m. in the Governor's Public Reception Room of the State Capitol building. The Governor's Public Reception Room is located on the south side of the second floor.
"It's an honor to be invited for an audience with the Governor. We're all thankful for the opportunity, " said Knoll.
Matt Knoll, director of tennis operations and head men's coach, and assistant coach Rob Cheyne's 2004 team brought Baylor its first NCAA team championship. The squad posted a 32-2 record en route to the NCAA crown. In addition, Benedikt Dorsch was named the tournament's most outstanding player and Benjamin Becker claimed the NCAA singles title. The Bears ended the season with five players listed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) final rankings: Dorsch ranked No. 1, Becker checked in at No. 9, Matias Marin was No. 80, Matija Zgaga was listed at No. 108 and Ivor Lovrak ranked No. 125. Dorsch and Zgaga were the team's highest-ranked doubles tandem, finishing at No. 8. Five players return off last season's championship squad including Dorsch, Becker and Zgaga. Other returnees include Barry McLaren (redshirt) and Jon Reckewey.
