The Baylor men's golf team assaulted the flags as it posted a 6-under par team score of 282 in the final round to move up from 13th to a sixth-place finish at the William H. Tucker hosted by New Mexico Saturday at the University's 7,354-yard, par-72 Championship Course.
Sophomore Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) carded a 3-under par 69 to finish tied for fifth with a 54-hole total of 5-under par 211, a new career low. Frye rolled in seven birdies on the final round, including five of the last seven holes.
Sophomore Matt Briggs (San Antonio, Texas) played the best round of his collegiate career with a 5-under par 67. Briggs played the front nine at 2-under par and, after a bogey on 12, he birdied three straight and four of the last six holes. Briggs tied for 33rd after starting the day tied for 84th.
Sophomores Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) and Dusty Isabell (Athens, Texas) each carded a 73. Meck had two bogeys on the front nine, but came back with a birdie on the back to tie for 72nd. Isabell tied for 46th with a 223, while sophomore Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) posted a 76 to finish tied for 53rd with a 224.
Arizona claimed the team title with a 9-under 855, just two strokes ahead of New Mexico. UNLV was 1-under, Texas Tech was even, followed by Texas A&M at 2-over par. UNLV's Ryan Moore fired a 7-under par 65 in the final round to take individual medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 11-under par 205. New Mexico's Spencer Levin finished second at 9-under par 207, followed by a pair of golfers at 7-under par.
Baylor returns to action at the Pepperdine Club Glove Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday Oct. 11-12 in Camarillo, Calif.
