WACO, Texas - Daniela Covello and Zuzana Cerna advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles action of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Women's Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
Texas A&M is hosting the tournament which features top players from 23 Division I schools. Top teams competing besides Texas A&M and Baylor are Tulane, Texas, LSU, TCU, SMU and Rice.
In the round of 32, Covello, a junior, defeated Texas' Katie Ruckert in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, then posted a hard-fought victory over Nicki Mechem of Texas A&M, 7-6, 7-5. Cerna advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Southeastern Louisiana's Breda Kovac, 6-0, 6-1, and posting a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Camila Caliari of LSU. Zuzana Krchnakova, Klara Zrustova and Iva Mihaylova each lost in the round of 32 in two sets.
Cerna and Covello will each begin quarterfinal action at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. Cerna will take on Texas A&M's Helga Vieira and Covello will tackle fifth-seeded Helena Besovic of TCU. Zrustova won her first round match in the back draw and will play Texas' Katie Ruckert in the consolation quarterfinals.
In doubles, the fourth seeded tandem of Cerna and Covello defeated Houston's Diana Martin and Kami Miller, 8-6, in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Baylor tandem will face the tournament's top seed, Kendra Strom and Katie Ruckert of Texas at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
