WACO, Texas - Baylor pitchers Ryan LaMotta and Abe Woody were named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America team, released Thursday.
LaMotta, a true freshman from Sugar Land, Texas, enters this weekend's NCAA Super Regional with a 7-2 record, two saves and a team-leading 3.50 ERA. He has appeared in 28 games, including three starts, and ranks among the Big 12 Conference leaders in opposing batting average (third), ERA (fourth), and appearances (fifth).
Woody, a redshirt freshman from Round Rock, Texas, is a perfect 6-0 on the year with a 3.99 ERA and three saves. Batters have averaged just .208 against him, tops on the team. Like LaMotta, Woody was named honorable mention All-Big 12 by the league's coaches.
The two freshman all-America selections are the eighth and ninth in Baylor history. The seven previous honorees are: Jeremy Dodson (1996), Jon Topolski (1996), Jason Jennings (1997), Josh Scott (1998), Zane Carlson (2000), Mike Huggins (2000) and Michael Griffin (2002). Carlson was the National Freshman of the Year in 2000.
The Bears' season continues Friday as they face LSU in NCAA Super Regional action in Baton Rouge, La. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
