Box Score
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - No. 6 Baylor recorded 17 hits and scored four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to beat No. 23 Texas A&M 9-1 in College Station Saturday night.
A crowd of 7,687, the sixth-largest crowd ever at Olsen Field, watched Baylor (22-8, 6-2 Big 12) even the season series with Texas A&M (22-9, 4-4 Big 12). The win kept the Bears in a first-place tie with Nebraska and Texas, who each also won Saturday.
Sean Walker (5-1) went the distance for his first career complete game. The sophomore stuck out six, walked one and scattered 10 hits.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second. Michael Griffin led off the frame with a double to right, took third on a single by Reid Brees and scored on a groundout by Trey Webb.
That score held into the fifth, when the Bears scored four times. Baylor put together five hits in the inning and took advantage of an error by shortstop Matt Alexander to score three unearned runs and take a 5-0 lead. The inning ended on a two-out single by Mark Saccomanno that drove in Seth Fortenberry but saw Webb gunned out at the plate by left fielder Scott Beerer.
The Aggies replaced starter Zach Dixon (4-1) to start the fifth, but Baylor continued its hot hitting off reliever Robert Ray. Each of the six hitters Ray faced got a hit; the freshman right-handed recorded only one out, when Josh Ford ran threw a stop sign and was thrown out at third on a single to right.
Senior Dwayne Pollok took over on the mound and walked the first batter he faced, then got Webb to ground into a double play to escape the inning.
David Murphy and Michael Griffin each had three hits for the Bears, two of the five Bears to record multiple-hit nights. Griffin had two doubles on the night, his team-leading 12th and 13th of the year.
The Bears and Aggies meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. in the series finale at Olsen Field.
