WACO, Texas - The Bears started off the day losing the doubles point to the Iowa State Cyclones but came back strong to sweep the singles competition and win the match 6-1 today at the Baylor Tennis Center. With the win the Bears move to 3-4 overall and remain undefeated in the Big 12 at 2-0.
In doubles play, the team of Vida Mulec and Izabela Mijic were paired up for the first time this season and earned the only Bear victory in doubles play over Iowa State's Eve Soriano and Beth Chermel 8-2. Stephanie Balzert and Daria Potapova were upset by Kristin Gyaki and Tara Goedjen 8-5, and Iowa State sealed the doubles point in the No.1 spot where Sabrina Evers and Suzanne Rutten defeated Barbora Blahutiakova and Alison Bradley 8-6.
In singles action, #45 Mulec got back on track after a two game skid by beating Evers 6-0, 7-6. Potapova earned her first win in the No. 2 spot and her fourth win in a row with her victory over Kristin Gyaki 6-1, 6-1. Mijic won her sixth match in a row by beating Eve Soriano 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot, while Bradley won her first singles match this spring season over Charlotte Ljungkrantz 6-1, 6-3. Balzert earned a win in the No. 3 spot against Tara Goedjen 6-0, 6-3 and Blahutiakova finished off Chermel in the No. 5 spot 6-3, 6-0.
"I was disappointed with our doubles play," said head coach Joey Scrivano "but I am very proud the way these girls bounced back and played very disciplined during singles to earn the win."
