WACO, Texas - Six Baylor men's tennis players will compete in the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships. The tournament is the largest of the season and will be hosted at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Oct. 3-12. This tournament will be a good measuring stick to see how the Bears stack up against over 300 competitors. Representing Baylor will be: Benedikt Dorsch, Ivor Lovrak, Benjamin Becker, Jon Reckewey, Jason Gould, and Matija Zgaga.
Baylor comes into the tournament hot off sweeping victories by Benedikt Dorsch in the singles and Dorsch and his partner Ivor Lovrak in doubles at the H-E-B/Baylor Intercollegiate tournament.
Dorsch, the nation's No. 1 ranked player, was eliminated in the semifinals last year in ITA All-American Championships. In the tournament he won 11 straight matches to advance to the semifinals from pre-qualifiers.
The main draw and the qualifying rounds are both made up of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams, out of which 16 singles and eight doubles teams will advance from both rounds. The pre-qualifying round consists of 256-singles players and 128-doubles teams out of these, eight singles and eight doubles teams will advance.
Qualifying for the main draw in singles are Benedikt Dorsch and Benjamin Becker while Ivor Lovrak will play in the qualifying singles. Participating in the pre-qualifying singles for Baylor are Jason Gould and freshmen Matija Zgaga and Jon Reckewey. Baylor's team in the main draw doubles will be the duo of Dorsch and Becker, while the teams of Lovrak/Zgaga, and Reckewey/Gould will participate in the pre-qualifying doubles.
Competing for Baylor on Oct. 3 in the pre-qualifying round will be Gould who will play John Gamble of Tennessee-Chattanooga at 8 a.m., Reckewey will compete against James Spence of Memphis at 10:30 a.m. and Zgaga, the tournament's No. 1 seed in pre-qualifiers, will compete against the yet to be named No. 4 alternate also at 10:30 a.m.
