WACO, Texas - Baseball fans throughout Texas probably heard about Elkins High School taking the state championship and finishing as the No. 1 team, according to Baseball America.
Baylor baseball fans paid close attention to Elkins' ride through the state playoffs, led by Bear signee James Loney, a left-handed ace on the mound in addition to playing first base. Loney's performance, including several dominating performances in the playoffs, led to him being named Houston's Player of the Year by the Houston Chronicle.
The Elkins state championsip garnered plenty of attention in Texas, and rightfully so. But Loney wasn't the only Baylor baseball signee to have led his team to a state title this season.
Hurling 19 of his team's 23 postseason innings, Kevin Sevigny steered the Sanford Redskins to the Maine Class A Championship. The senior allowed just two runs in that time and picked up three wins, including a 9-1 win in the championship game.
