WACO, Texas - The 15th-ranked Bears finished off a doubleheader sweep of Dallas Baptist with a 14-4, seven-inning run-rule game Saturday evening at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (34-17) avenged a 9-7 loss Friday night by winning the opener Saturday, 4-1, and then run-ruling the Patriots (35-15) in the nightcap. Strong pitching, consistent hitting and solid defense by Baylor were the formula for success all day.
In the second game, the Bears pounded out 18 hits, led by Mike Huggins' 4-for-5 day. Huggins missed hitting for the cycle by just a double, having notched his seventh triple and ninth home run of the year in the game. The junior first baseman drove in five runs and scored three times.
Perhaps most impressive, however, was the outing by Trey Taylor (3-3). The freshman lefty struck out a career-best 10 batters in just five innings, allowing only one hit and one unearned run.
Freshman Ryan Bennett took the hill to start the sixth, making only his second career appearance. Bennett allowed three runs in the sixth before settling down and throwing a scoreless seventh inning.
Trey Webb had three hits and scored four times from the leadoff spot. Eight of the nine starters and 11 of the 14 position players who appeared in the game had at least one hit.
The Bears scored their first seven runs off starter Dan Reed (6-1), who gave up nine hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Four other Patriot pitchers followed, combining to allow seven more runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Baylor continues non-conference play Tuesday against Southwest Texas in a game only recently added to the schedule. The Bears and Bobcats square off Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
