COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 33 Baylor women's tennis team was eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament with a loss in the quarterfinals to No. 46 Oklahoma State, 4-2. Baylor now drops to 17-8 on the season while Oklahoma State moves to 14-10.
Baylor won the doubles point and needed to win three of the six singles matches to secure the victory, however, that was not to be.
Playing together for the first time this season, seniors Paola Stephen and Katja Kovac combined to post an impressive 9-8 (7-3) victory over the 12th-ranked Linda Faltynkova and Katia Kolodynska. Kovac and Stephen were facing match point at 6-7 when Kovac nailed a backhand down the line to keep the match alive then hit two more winners to even the score at 7-7. Oklahoma State went up 3-1 in the tiebreaker but the Bears scored five straight points to win the tiebreaker and the match. Baylor freshmen Patricia Graf and Daria Potapova were the first doubles team to finish, giving the Bears an 8-5 victory. Freshman Barbora Blahutiakova and senior Frida Borjesson lost at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
In singles the Bears dropped five of six first sets, Kovac posted the only first set victory with a 6-4 win over Olszewska. Oklahoma State gained two quick points when Graf lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Blahutiakova lost 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5. Potapova gave the Bears their second point with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No 4. After Borjesson lost at No. 3, two matches were still on the courts and the Bears had to win both to secure the victory. The outcome was decided when, after losing the first set to Kovac, OSU's Olszewska roared back and claimed the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to gain the Cowgirls' fourth point and the match.
Now, head coach Dave Luedtke's squad will have to wait it out to see if they're selected for the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be held on Thurs., May 2 at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
