The Bears, after posting successive victories over ranked teams, will play two matches in one day when they host UT-Pan American at 1 p.m. and UT-San Antonio at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4 at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor, currently ranked No. 13, have defeated No. 13 Mississippi State (4-3) and upset No. 8 SMU in Dallas (4-3) on Saturday.
Becker Named Preseason All-Big 12
Freshman Benjamin Becker was Baylor's lone preseason All-Big 12 selection as voted by the conference coaches. Becker, a native or Orscholz, Germany, is currently ranked No. 3 nationally, the highest ever for a Baylor player. Becker finished the fall season with a 14-4 record and made it to the finals of the ITA Indoor Nationals.
Baylor in the Rankings
According to the latest team rankings released Wed., Jan. 30 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Baylor men's tennis team moved up three spots from No. 16 to No. 13 in the country.
Matt Knoll's men's team, currently 2-0 on the season, is the Big 12's highest ranked team. They defeated then-No. 14 Mississippi State last week by a score of 4-3 and posted a 4-3 road win over No. 8 SMU on Sat., Feb. 2.
In the ITA Top 100 individual rankings released on Dec. 12, three Bears received rankings. Freshman Benjamin Becker checked in at No. 3, newcomer Markus Hornung, a sophomore, is No. 25 and sophomore Reiner Neurohr ranks No. 91. In doubles, three teams made the rankings. Hornung and Neurohr raned highest at No. 8 while Becker and Hornung are No. 19 and Zoltan Papp and Nathan McGregor are No. 57.
Undefeated
The Bears have three singles players and one doubles team that are currently undefeated in dual match play. Markus Hounung, Zoltan Papp and Matias Marin all have posted 2-0 records so far and the doubles team of Benjamin Becker and Zoltan Papp are also 2-0. Baylor is undefeated at three singles positions, No. 2, 3 and 5 and the No. 2 doubles slot, held down by Becker and Papp, is undefeated also.
