WACO, Texas - Collegiate Baseball named Baylor pitcher Jared Theodorakos as one of three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week Monday following the junior's outstanding weekend performance.
A left-handed pitcher from St. Louis, Mo., Theodorakos carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and finished with a one-hitter Saturday as Baylor beat No. 6 Southern California at Dodger Stadium, 8-1. The lefty held USC hitless for seven-and-a-third innings before allowing his first hit. Theodorakos recorded his first career complete game and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
Theodorakos is the third Bear to be honored as National Player of the Week under coach Steve Smith. Jon Topolski earned the honor in 1998, and Kyle Evans repeated the feat in 2000.
Also recognized by Collegiate Baseball were LHP Jeffery Terrell of Tennessee, who no-hit Bowling Green, and OF/1B Ryan Kenning of New Mexico State, who belted five home runs over four games last week.
The Big 12 Conference also named Theodorakos the Phillips 66 Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Monday for games played Feb. 11-17. That makes two straight weeks the Bears have had a conference player/pitcher of the week, Tim Hartshorn was the league's top player in the first week of the season.
Texas OF/DH Dustin Majewski and Texas A&M SS Matt Alexander were named Big 12 Conference Co-Baseball Players of the Week.
The Bears moved up to 17th in Baseball America's poll and 23rd in Collegiate Baseball's poll after sweeping USC in a three-game series last weekend. Baylor continues non-conference action this week, playing at Houston Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then hosting Oral Roberts in a three-game set this weekend.
