Box Score

WACO, Texas - The Baylor offense scored 11 runs in the first three innings and coasted to a 12-1 win over UTSA Wednesday night in the Bears' home opener.

Baylor (1-3) scored twice in the first, but it was an eight-run second inning that did in the Roadrunners (0-1). Michael Griffin reached on an error by the UTSA shortstop to open the inning. Two batters and one out later, Steve Dorneman hit a home run to left -- his first in almost two years -- giving the Bears a 4-0 lead.

The next six batters against UTSA starter Scott Sanders (0-1) all reached base, culminated by a two-run triple by Mike Huggins that knocked Sanders out of the game. Sanders line on the night finished at one-and-a-third innings, seven hits, 10 runs (seven earned), three walks, no strikeouts.

The UTSA bullpen performed well, pitching the final six-and-two-thirds innings and allowing just two runs. Even so, five Bears (Trey Webb, Paul Richmond, Chris Durbin, Eric Errante and Dorneman) each ended the evening with two hits.

Baylor's Justin Taylor (1-0) got back on track with an excellent outing, throwing six shutout innings on just 59 pitches. The senior struck out four, walked no one, and gave up two hits.

The Bears take to the road on the weekend, heading to Los Angeles to face sixth-ranked Southern Cal in a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT.
