WACO, Texas - Baylor senior Zoltan Papp won two singles matches on Saturday and is the lone Bear to advance to the quarterfinals in the Region VI Omni Hotels South Central Championships at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. In addition, Papp and doubles partner Benjamin Becker reached the semifinals of the tourney.
Papp, Becker and Matias Marin all won round of 32 matches while Ivor Lovrak lost in the same round. Becker and Marin each won in straight sets against their University of Texas opponents. Becker defeated Jimmy Haney and Marin downed Alastair Jenkin. Papp dropped the first set to Texas' Roger Gubser but came roaring back to post a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win. Texas Tech's Radek Mijaki eliminated Lovrak from the tournament in straight sets.
In the round of 16, Becker, the tournament's No. 1 seed, fell to defeat to Rice's Robert Searle in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. Marin lost 6-1, 6-4 to Texas' Jean Simon, seeded second. Papp, seeded third, eliminated Texas' Joe Morris 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. In consolation singles, freshman Jason Gould posted two, three-set wins to move into tomorrow's semifinals.
Two Baylor doubles teams were in the round of 16. However, only one advanced to the quarterfinals. Becker and Papp, seeded sixth, defeated UT-Arlington's Sandy Farquharson and Nathan McGregor 8-2. However, the tournament's top-seeded doubles team of Jean Simon and Jose Zarhi of Texas defeated Lovrak and Marin, 8-3. Becker and Papp went on to beat Matt Loucks and John Nallon of Texas A&M, 8-4 to move into the semifinals
