Waco - The 20th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team started their 2002 season with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Lady Raiders of Middle Tennessee State on Friday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Bears (1-0) lost the doubles point then reeled off four straight singles wins to claim the match.
In doubles, Middle Tennessee's Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell, ranked No. 33 nationally, upset Baylor's 29th ranked doubles team of Katja Kovac and Vida Mulec, 8-5. The Baylor duo dropped the first two games then won three straight before succumbing to the Lady Raiders. The other two doubles matches each went to a tiebreaker before the doubles point was decided. At No. 2 doubles the Lady Raiders' Jennifer Klaschka and Verena Preiss eeked out a 9-8 victory, winning the tiebreaker 13-11, over Frida Borjesson and Patricia Graf. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Daria Potapova and senior Paola Stephen posted Baylor's only doubles victory by a 9-8 (9-7) score over Carien Venter and Michaela Gridling.
In singles, Kovac, Mulec, Graf and Blahutiakova each posted victories for Baylor while Preiss and Gridling were victorious for Middle Tennessee.
The Bears' next action comes on Saturday, Jan. 26th when they host Rice. The match is set for 10:00 p.m at the Baylor Tennis Center.
