Sept. 29, 2001

Waco, Texas - Reiner Neurohr and Markus Hornung advanced to the doubles finals of the Baylor Intergollegiates and will play the tournament's #3 seed Texas' Jean Simon and Jose Zarhi for the championship on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 12:30 p.m.

Neurohr, a sophomore, and Hornung, a freshman, both natives of Germany, defeated Tulsa's Ryan Livesay and Dustin Taylor, 8-6, to advance to the finals. In quarterfinal action they defeated Johann Van Der Westhuizen and Michael Tarkowski of UL-Lafayette, 8-5.

"I was pleased with doubles. The second match was better in the semifinals. They hung in there and they didn't break us once," said Baylor head coach Matt Knoll.

After winning the first set 6-2, freshman Benjamin Becker dropped the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 and lost in the semifinals to the tourney's #5 seed Andy Leber of UT-Arlington. In the gold consolation bracket, sophomore Matias Marin won his quarterfinal match over Tulsa's Dustin Taylor, 6-1, 6-1. SMU's Johan Brunstrom defeated Marin in the consolation semifinals, 0-6, 7-6, 6-4.

"In singles we saw a common thread. In both matches we won the first set then lost the match. They thought it would be easy but you can't let off the accelerator," added Knoll.

"We haven't won a tournament in doubles or singles since I've been here. It would be nice to see them win one. We have had some great players over the years," commented Knoll.
