Waco, Texas - Freshman Benjamin Becker is the lone Baylor tennis player to advance to the semifinal round of the Baylor Intercollegiates held at the Baylor Tennis Center. The doubles team of Markus Hornung and Reiner Neurohr moved into the semifinal round as well.
Becker, a native of Orscholz, Germany, is the only unseeded player to advance to the semifinals. He defeated Baylor teammate Reiner Neurohr, the No. 7 seed, 6-1, 6-3. Becker had upset the tournament's No. 2 seed, South Alabama's Christian Thall, on Thursday, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. Becker will face the tourney's No. 5 seed Andy Leber of UT-Arlington on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
In addition to Becker, freshman Armando Carrascosa and Neurohr all won round of 16 matches while Zoltan Papp lost his match to the No. 8 seed, Texas' Rodrigo Echagaray. Carrascosa and Neurohr each suffered defeats in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, Hornung and Neurohr upset SMU's Johan Brunstrom and Ryan Mauck by a score of 8-5. Brunstrom and Mauck were seeded No. 2 in the tournament. Hornung is a freshman from Ludwigshafen, Germany and Neurohr is a sophomore from Worms, Germany.
"Ben (Becker) got off to a great start in his match against Reiner (Neurohr) today. He was pretty sharp early," said Baylor head coach Matt Knoll. "In doubles, Reiner and Markus (Hornung) had a quality win. But, our other two doubles are not at a level we want them to be. Armando (Carrascosa) had a good tournament, he just ran out of gas today," he added.
