HOUSTON, Texas - Five double plays and a four-for-five day from catcher Philip Ghutzman stalled Baylor's chance at locking up a Super Regional berth as the Bears fell to Rice 7-4 in NCAA Regional play Sunday afternoon at Reckling Park.
Baylor (37-23) and Rice (46-18) each have one loss in the tournament and will meet Monday at 1 p.m. for the Regional championship and the chance to advance to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska in the Super Regional.
The Bears struck early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Trevor Mote led off with an infield single and Tim Hartshorn singled to the left side. Mote came in on an RBI double by Chris Durbin and an single from Shoppach plated Hartshorn to give Baylor an early lead.
After two scoreless innings, Rice responded with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead 3-2.
Baylor threatened in the seventh, bunting to load the bases with no outs, but Hartshorn struck out and Durbin hit into a double play to end the inning.
In the eighth, Ghutzman lifted a home run over the left wall off Baylor reliever Paul Thorp (3-1) and the Owls built momentum from there, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth.
