WACO, Texas - The Baylor baseball team racked up three home runs and led Iowa State for six innings, but it was not enough as the Cyclones scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Bears 6-5 in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament Thursday afternoon at Bricktown Ballpark.
With the loss, the Bears fall to 35-22 on the season and are eliminated from the tournament. Iowa State, whose program has been discontinued, improves to 24-28-1 while capturing its first-ever tournament victory.
After Iowa State scored a run in the first and a run in the second to take a 2-0 lead, Baylor battled back with a pair of runs in the third to tie the game. Making his first career start at shortstop, Trey Webb doubled to left field and came in on a sacrifice fly by Chris Durbin. Kelly Shoppach then belted a towering home run to left field.
The Bears scored three more runs in the fourth inning, including solo homers by Tim Hartshorn and David Murphy.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Cyclone runners at second and third, a ground ball to Bears second baseman Trevor Mote was misplayed and the winning run scored on the error.
Baylor starter Justin Taylor worked seven-plus innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out four and walking none. Reliever Zane Carlson (1-5) took the loss, giving up one earned on three hits in an inning and a third.
Of note, Durbin extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the first inning. It is the second-best streak put together by a Baylor player this season.
