Southwest Texas State pounded out 18 hits against five Baylor pitchers en route to a 12-9 victory over the 14th-ranked Bears Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
Cody Hall (0-1) took the loss for the Bears (33-18) after giving up three earned runs in one-plus innings of work. Manuel Olivera picked up his sixth win of the year for the Bobcats in relief.
Baylor jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second after an RBI single by Tim Hartshorn and an RBI double by Chris Durbin.
Southwest Texas State (35-17) countered with two runs in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The Bobcats were led offensively by catcher Josh Newland, who was two-for-five on the night with two home runs.
The Bears would score two runs in the seventh and two in the ninth but could not muster enough hits to close the gap. In the seventh, Matt Williams singled to left and later scored on a wild pitch. Trevor Mote then singled in Mike Huggins to cut the lead to 11-7. After back-to-back doubles by David Murphy and Huggins, Mote drove in Murphy with a sacrifice fly. Hartshorn then singled in Huggins for the Bears' last run.
Baylor takes a week off to concentrate on final exams before returning to action against Southwest Texas on Wednesday, May 9. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
