WACO, Texas - Steven White might not have had his best performance of the year Friday night, but Baylor's bats were strong enough to overcome a 6-0 deficit and defeat Dallas Baptist 10-7 in the opener of a three-game set at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (26-9) fell behind quickly when DBU (22-9) plated two runs in each of the first three innings, but Baylor started its comeback when Chris Durbin's third inning double scored two. Kelly Shoppach followed that with an RBI double and the rally was underway.
Durbin was key to the Bears' attack, going three-for-four with five RBI. Baylor grabbed its first lead of the night in the fifth when Durbin homered to right-center, giving the Bears a 7-6 advantage. Two batters later, Ron Zboril smashed a two-run home run to right and the Bears never looked back.
White (8-0) settled down after a rough start and managed to pick up the win after throwing six innings and striking out nine. DBU starter Kenny Trapp (8-3) was relieved mid-way through the sixth inning after the Bears had pounded out 14 hits and scored eight earned runs.
Of note, Shoppach extended his hitting streak to 26 games. He went four-for-four with three doubles, giving him 15 on the year and improving his batting average to an astounding .484.
Paul Thorp relieved White during the seventh, pitching two scoreless innings and Zane Carlson sealed the deal for Baylor in the ninth, picking up his sixth save of the 2001 campaign.
Baylor will continue the series with the Patriots tomorrow when they play the first game of a double header at 3 p.m. Saturday at Baylor Ballpark.
