SAN MARCOS, Texas - Fans of the 15th-ranked Baylor baseball team who waited through an hour-and-20-minute rain delay before the game even began were treated to an extra-inning pitching duel Tuesday night that lasted into Wednesday and ended in a 15-inning, 3-2 win for the Bears over Southwest Texas State.

Paul Richmond, who had pinch-hit in the 12th inning, singled to lead off the 15th against Dickie Gonzalez (0-3). David Murphy followed with a walk and Trey Webb, who also entered the game in the 12th, moved both runners over with a perfect sacrifice bunt. Steve Dorneman's sacrifice fly drove home Richmond for the go-ahead run.

The Bobcats (27-15) lost at home for the first time this season in 16 games. Baylor (28-14) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory.

Baylor closer Zane Carlson (1-2) threw a career-high 6.2 innings in relief, striking out seven and earning his first win of the season. Paul Thorp relieved to get the final out in the 15th inning and pick up his second save.

Baylor struck first, scoring in the fifth inning when David Murphy slugged a solo home run that put the Bears up 1-0. After Chris Durbin singled in the top of the ninth to extend his hitting streak to nine games, Mike Huggins drove him in for what seemed at the time to be an insurance run.

Carlson took the mound for the Bears to begin the ninth. SWTS loaded the bases with no one out on a walk, a single and a fielders choice bunt. Carlson struck out the next hitter, then allowed a sacrifice fly that narrowed the margin to 2-1.

A wild pitch moved the tying run to third base with two outs, and an infield hit to shortstop drove in the tying run for SWTS. Carlson struck out the final batter of the ninth to push the game to extra innings.

The Bears threatened in the 12th inning, putting runners on first and third with one out, but were unable to score off SWTS reliever Cory Covert, who pitched six shutout innings in relief for the Bobcats and struck out seven Bears. Gonzalez, who red-shirted for Baylor in 1998, relieved Covert to start the 15th inning.

Baylor starter Jared Theodorakos pitched a career-high seven shutout innings and struck out a career-high eight batters. Theodorakos was relieved to start the eighth by Kyle Edens, who shutout the Bobcats for one inning before Carlson came on.

The game was easily the longest of the season for Baylor, taking four hours and 20 minutes to complete 15 innings.

The Bears return to Big 12 play on the weekend as Baylor travels to Austin to face Texas Friday at 6:30 p.m.
