COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After four grueling hours, the 17th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team came away with a 4-3 upset victory on the road Thursday against No. 12-ranked Texas A&M.
It was a typical A&M and Baylor match, as the final outcome was not decided until the final match standing was completed. The last six meetings have been just as close, with the winning team claiming no more than minimum number of points required to win.
With the win, Baylor improved to 17-4 overall, 7-1 in Big 12 play. The Aggies dropped to 16-4 overall and to 6-2 in conference.
The Bears took the early lead as they grabbed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. It was just the third time this season that the Aggies had dropped the first point of the match, the Aggies are 15-1 when winning doubles but 0-3 when losing the point. Baylor is 15-1 this spring when taking the doubles point.
In singles, the Aggies quickly tied the overall match score as Leah Killen beat Baylor's Paola Stephen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. Baylor did not wait long to take back their lead, 2-1, as Karin Andersson topped A&M's Majorie Terburgh, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4. The Bears then took a 3-1 advantage as Baylor's Frida Borjesson defeated A&M's Roberta Spencer, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6. The loss ended an eight-match winning streak for Spencer.
Meanwhile, the remaining three matches traveled to a third set. Baylor needed to win just one of three third sets in order to claim the overall team win. However, the Aggies grabbed early leads in matches at Nos. 2 and 3 while holding serve at No. 1.
A&M's Olivia Karlikova battled her way to a three set win at No. 3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, over Baylor's No. 80-ranked Vida Mulec. With the Aggies trailing by the score of 3-2, Baylor was making a move at No. 2 singles. The Bears' No. 28-ranked Katja Kovac overcame a 3-1 lead by A&M's Jessica Roland to tie the third set at 3, but Roland came back to win the seventh game and take a 4-3 advantage in the final set.
On the adjoining court, A&M's Martina Nedorostova was battling Baylor's No. 29-ranked Jahnavi Parekh to a 4-4 knot. Nedorostova won the ninth game with a two-handed backhand smash down the right line to take a 5-4 lead.
Back on court two, Kovac tied the third set score at 4, but Roland grabbed the next game to take a 5-4 lead. On court one, Parekh tied the set at 5 games each, and before Nedorostova could blink an eye she found herself down 6-5 to Parekh.
The Aggies then tied the overall match as Roland grabbed the win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 2. Less than two minutes later, however, Parekh pulled out the the remaining match, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 to give Baylor the win.
Baylor hits the road this weekend to face 16th-ranked Oklahoma State and unranked Oklahoma Saturday and Monday, respectively.
