WACO, Texas - No. 18 Baylor used another strong start, this time from junior Kyle Edens, to win 7-2 and complete a doubleheader sweep of Nicholls State Sunday. The Bears' bats stayed hot, pounding out 12 hits and knocking Nicholls State starter Ben Thompson out in the fifth inning.
Baylor (8-3) got to Thompson (1-2) early, jumping out to an 2-0 lead in the second inning when Steve Dorneman singled, scoring Matt Williams, and Paul Richmond's sacrifice fly scored Ron Zboril. Zboril went two-for-four on the day, and his fifth-inning RBI double finally opened up the game, scoring Matt Williams and Mike Huggins to put Baylor ahead 6-1.
Nicholls State (5-6) could only muster two hits off Edens (2-0) who threw five innings, giving up one run and striking out seven.
The Bears' balanced lineup produced nine batters who hit safely. Second baseman Trevor Mote, however, went hitless in three at-bats, thus ending his 10-game hitting streak.
Paul Thorp relieved Edens, pitching the sixth and seventh innings. Thorp gave up one run while striking out five. Justin Taylor threw a perfect eighth and Zane Carlson gave up one hit while striking out two as he closed the game and the homestand for Baylor.
Baylor ended its eight-game homestand, going 6-2. The Bears will return to action Tuesday night when they play at UTSA at 7 p.m.
