WACO, Texas - Kelly Shoppach and Matt Williams each smacked home runs and back-up catcher Paul Richmond hit the first grand slam of his life as the Baylor baseball team cruised to a 22-3 win over Southwest Texas.

With the win, the Bears improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 6-3. The last time Baylor scored 22 runs in a game was against Minnesota in the 1999 Waco Regional.

Southwest Texas scored first when Bryan Kent singled in Lance Williams in the first inning. Baylor responded with a leadoff home run to left field by Shoppach in the second. Just a batter later, Williams blasted a home run over the centerfield wall to put the Bears up 2-1.

In the third, Baylor widened the gap with a pair of runs in the third when Mark Saccomanno walked and Trevor Mote singled to centerfield to put runners in scoring position. Chris Durbin's sacrifice fly drove in Saccomanno, and Mike Huggins smacked a double to left field to bring in Mote.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Bears pounded out five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to lead the Bobcats 11-2.

In the seventh inning, Durbin led off with a single to left and Richmond doubled to put runners at first and second. Huggins then walked to load the bases and Williams hit a two-run double down the left field line. Two batters later, David Murphy belted a triple to centerfield to bring in two runs and Saccomanno walked to put runners at first and second. In his second at-bat of the inning, Durbin was hit by the pitcher to load the bases and set up a grand slam to centerfield by Richmond.

Baylor sophomore Jared Theodorakos (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, scattering six hits and one run over five innings. Tim Wade (0-2) got the loss for Southwest Texas.

The Bears continue their homestand with a three-game series against Nicholls State on the weekend. First pitch Friday is set for 7 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
