Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Katja Kovac opened the Riviera Women's All-American Championships with a first round win then lost in the second round but the doubles duo of Kovac and Vida Mulec won and advanced to the second round of qualifying.
Kovac, a senior and the qualifying draw's No. 2 seed, defeated UC-Irvine's Jonni Seymour in the first round, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (2). Later in the day she fell to Aleksanda Durska of Tulsa, 6-1, 6-3. Mulec, a junior, lost her first round match to Georgia's Agata Cioroch, 6-0, 6-4
In doubles, Kovac and Mulec handily defeated California's Christina Fusano and Nicole Havlicek, 8-1. They will face Stacy McKenna and Erica Perkins of Washington State on Wednesday.
