Stone Mountain, GA - Matias Marin, Zoltan Papp and Markus Hornung all won their qualifying round matches and have advanced to the qualifying singles draw of the ITA All-American Championships at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Stone Mountain, Georgia. They join teammates Benni Becker and Reiner Neurohr in the qualifying singles.
Only eight players from the 256 entered in the prequalifying draw advanced to the qualifying draw. There are 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams entered in the qualifying draw. Sixteen singles players and eight doubles teams will advance from the qualifying draw to the mail draw.
Despite dropping the first set, Marin, a sophomore from Rosario, Argentina, rallied to defeat Georgia Tech's Joao Menano, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Papp, a junior from Budapest, Hungary, dispensed of Vanderbilt's Bobby Reynolds, 6-2, 6-3, and Hornung, a freshman from Ludwigshafen, Germany, posted a three-set victory over Alex Zharinov of Minnesota by scores of 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2).
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, five Baylor netters will play in singles. Hornung takes on Michael Calkins of Illinois, Neurohr, a sophomore from Worms, Germany and the draw's 12th-seed, will play Oliver Foreman of Middle Tennessee State and Marin will face the draw's 16th-seed, Northwestern's Jackie Jenkins. Papp plays 14th-seeded Xavier Luscan of Florida State and Benni Becker, a freshman from Orscholz, Germany, takes on Illinois' Nathan Zeder.
Three Baylor teams will participate in doubes. Becker and Hornung will take on the draw's top-seeded team on Selin/Stahlberg of Mississippi. Marin and Cory Ross (sophomore, Littleton, Colo.) will face Georgia Tech's Nott/Schnugg and Neurohr and Papp, seeded No. 3, will play the doubles team of Rea/Simon of Tennessee.
