Stone Mountain, GA - Matias Marin, Zoltan Papp and Markus Hornung all won their fourth round matches, without losing a set, in the prequalifying tournament of the ITA All-American Championships on Sunday to raise their tournament singles records to 4-0 each. A victory on Monday will put them into the qualifying rounds of the tournament.
Marin defeated Tulsa's Dustin Taylor (6-4, 6-3) while Papp beat Jerome Belicard of Mississippi State (7-5, 6-1). Hornung won the first set off Scott Mayer of Purdue 6-4 and was leading 4-0 when Mayer retired. Marin will play Joao Menano of Georgia Tech while Papp plays Vanderbilt's Bobby Reynolds and Hornung faces Alex Zharinov of Minnesota. All matches begin at 9:00 a.m. (EDT) on Monday.
In doubles action Cory Ross and Marin continued their winning ways and have made it to the qualifying rounds of the tournament. They defeated Herrera and Jurd of Florida State 8-6.
"We still have nine matches to go to get to the finals," said head coach Matt Knoll. "We must continue to maintain our focus and play one match at a time."
If Marin, Papp or Hornung win on Monday, they will join teammates Benni Becker and Reiner Neurohr in the qualifying tournament.
The Bears claimed their second tournament championship under the Knoll when the doubles team of Mike Garcia and Nathan McGregor won the doubles championship of the UT-San Antonio Fall Classic on Sunday. The duo defeated Texas A&M's Jarin Skube and Khaled El Dorry 8-5. "I'm really proud of Mike and Nathan," said Knoll. "Two tournament championships in the last seven days, that's good for our program." Reiner Neurohr and Markus Hornung won Baylor's first doubles championship when they won the Baylor Intercollegiates title.
