Waco, Texas - Baylor freshman Markus Hornung won two matches on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals in singles in the 2001 Omni Hotels Region VI Championships at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. In addition, two of Baylor's doubles teams advanced to the semifinals.
En route to the quarterfinals, Hornung, seeded 14th, defeated TCU's Jacob Martin, 6-4, 6-2, and moved on in the bracket when seventh seed William Barker of Rice withdrew because of an injury. Hornung will play the tournament's top seed, Jean Simon of Texas, at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. The Bears who lost did not go down without a fight although. Of the six matches lost on the day, four of them went three sets.
In doubles, the teams of Hornung/Reiner Neurohr and Zoltan Papp/Nathan McGregor each advanced to the semifinals with victories on Saturday. Hornung and Neurohr, seeded No. 6, will take on No. 1 seed Jean Simon and Rodrigo Echagaray of Texas while No. 15 seeded Papp and McGregor will play UT-Arlington's Andy Leber and David Corrie, the tournament's No. 4 seed. Both matches will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
