DALLAS - SMU spoiled Baylor's season opener by putting two goals together in a two-minute span in the first half as the 13th-ranked Mustangs topped Baylor in Dallas, 2-1, in front of 667 fans.
A large Baylor crowd saw the Bears (0-1) open the game on the right note, as senior forward Molly Cameron scored the first goal of the season just five minutes into the game to give Baylor a 1-0 lead. For Cameron, the goal was her first since Nov. 6, 1998, as she missed the entire 1999 season due to injury.
Baylor held that lead until the 39th minute, when SMU junior forward Sarah Harvey notched her first goal of the night to tie the game. Harvey scored again just two minutes later to give SMU (1-0) the 2-1 lead, a lead the Mustangs would not relinquish.
The Beaars had chances in the second half, including two shots with the SMU goalie caught out of position in the 84th minute. Senior goalkeeper Becca Lief was able to smother both shots, however, preserving the SMU win.
"Considering all the personnel changes we have this year, I was not disappointed," Baylor head coach Nick Cowell said. "We battled hard, and we learned what we need to do in the future."
Seven freshmen saw their first collegiate action in the game: Melissa Humke, Erin Freeman and Candace Reilly all started the game, while Cookie Day, Emily Fukuchi, Ryan Lee and Stephanie Dempsey came in as substitutes.
"SMU is a top 20 team, and that's where we want to be," Cowell said.
Baylor will look to even its record Sunday when the Bears head west from Dallas to Fort Worth where they will play TCU. Sunday's match begins at 6 p.m.
