WACO, Texas - Baylor University's Board of Regents has approved plans for a new tennis complex at the Turner Riverfront Athletic Complex that, when finished, will consist of 15 new courts (six indoor), the renovation of the Streich Courts and lockerroom facilities for Baylor's tennis and softball programs.
The project will be completed in four phases, the first of which will begin in late June. Phase one includes six new varsity courts, along with lockerroom and office facilities for both men's and women's tennis and women's softball. The varsity courts will have 1,200 permanent seats with the ability to add portable seating that would bring capacity to 2,500. In addition, berms will border both sides of the six-court area to give spectators another vantage point.
Phase one, which costs approximately $4 million, is expected to be completed in time for Baylor to host the 2001 Big 12 Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, April 26-29.
The tennis complex joins the recently completed Baylor Ballpark and Getterman Stadium, the Bears' baseball and softball facilities, respectively, at the Turner Riverfront Athletic Complex.
The remaining phases of the tennis complex will include three additional outdoor courts, one of which will be a stadium court (phase two), a six-court indoor facility (phase three) and the reconfiguration of Baylor's existing Streich Court complex (phase four). Work on these phases will begin after appropriate gifts and pledges have been attained.
"We are excited about the opportunity to create the same kind of facility for our tennis programs that we have been able to establish for other sports in the Turner Riverfront Athletic Complex," said Stanton.
"We will continue our fundraising efforts in a major way to have outstanding facilities for all of our student-athletes. The tennis complex is a continuation of our commitment and fulfillment of our dreams. I am very appreciative for those individuals who have come forward to financially support the launch of our tennis complex project."
