WACO, Texas - A slow, muddy field created slow, muddy offenses for both teams as Baylor and Kansas battled to a 1-1 tie through double overtime on Sunday in the Bears' last regular season game of the season.
The tie, Baylor's third of the season, gives the Bears a record of 9-5-3, 6-2-2 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks tied for the second game in a row, giving them a record of 7-9-3, 3-5-2 in conference with one game to go in the season.
Baylor saw its four-game winning streak snapped, but the Bears remain undefeated since losing 2-1 at Texas on Sept. 29.
Kansas sophomore Brianna Valento scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute to put Kansas up 1-0. The Bears failed to clear a blocked shot, and Valento put the ball into the net.
The Jayhawks held onto the slim lead until the 83rd minute, when senior forward Molly Cameron recorded her 10th goal of the season. A pass from freshman Stephanie Dempsey bounced to Cameron, who headed the ball in from five feet out.
Kansas had two chances to win the game following Cameron's goal, but Baylor goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse made two spectacular saves to force overtime.
Each team managed just two shots on goal in the overtime periods. With 17 seconds remaining in the game, Baylor freshman Cookie Day was hurt on a defensive slide and remained down on the field for over 10 minutes. She was eventually diagnosed with a concussion and carried off the field in a stretcher. Her time schedule for return will be evaluated this week.
The Bears' next action will come at the Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, Nov. 1-4. Baylor will have the next two weeks to recuperate from numerous injuries and prepare for the tournament. The other teams at the top of the conference all play once next weekend to wrap up the year, so the Bears' finish in the Big 12 will not be determined until then.
