Joe Jon Finley, a two-time All-Big 12 and former NFL tight end, is in his first season on Baylor’s operations staff handling offensive quality control. His responsibilities include film breakdown and game-planning for opponents with statistics and tendencies.
Following a standout career at Oklahoma, Finley spent parts of four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (2008 and 2009 practice squads) and Detroit Lions (2010 practice squad and 2011 active roster).
Finley began his coaching career in 2011 after being released from the Lions, when he assisted the offensive line at Los Fresnos (Texas) High School under head coach and older brother Clint. He spent 2012 and 2013 at his alma mater working in offensive quality control before returning to Los Fresnos for the 2014 season.
Finley was a four-year letterman for the Sooners, and part of three Big 12 championship squads (2004, 2006 and 2007). He totaled 775 yards and 10 touchdowns on 62 career receptions in 50 games played from 2003 to 2007. He captained OU’s 2007 Big 12 championship team that finished No. 8 nationally, and played on the 2004 Big 12 championship squad that played in the BCS title game. He earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors as a junior and senior.
A former quarterback at Arlington (Texas) High School under his father, Mickey, from 1999 to 2002, Finley threw for 1,626 yards and 12 TDs and ran for 897 yards and nine TDs as a senior.
Finley and his wife Caylee are the parents of two, daughter Blakely and son Knox.
