Men cap it off by winning the 4x400 relay in season-best time
BIG 12 FINAL RESULTS
TUCSON, Ariz. – Going into her senior season, Baylor coach Michael Ford just wanted Tiriah Kelley to run the 100 to make her 200 meters faster.
Not only did it work, but the senior All-American finished second in the 100 with a career PR time of 11.13 while winning the 200 in a program-, meet- and facility-record time of 22.19 Saturday night at the Big 12 Championship at the University of Arizona's Drachman Stadium.
"I was probably more happy about her winning," Ford said. "She's been second. And then indoors, she was the favorite to win and got the flu. So, for her to come out and win, that was huge. And then, when I saw what the time was, I was like, 'Whoah, a wind-legal 22.19!' I was impressed by that."
Coupled with Tenly Kuhn's win in the pole vault on Friday, the Baylor women had two event titles and six top-three finishes, finishing fifth overall with 61 points. Texas Tech swept the men's and women's titles, with the Baylor men placing 10th with 37 points.
"I thought the ladies just grinded," Ford said. "The field events carried us yesterday. For us to get 1-2-4 in the pole vault and then Janae (De Gannes) with her big jump and Logan (Todorovich) getting another third in the heptathlon, I thought that set us up for today."
Other than Kelley's combined 18 points in the two sprints, freshman Success Oyibu had a pair of podium finishes, placing fifth in the 200 meters (22.94) and seventh in the 100 (11.33) and Royaltee Brown added a seventh-place finish in the 200 (23.20).
Running legs on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays that placed outside the top eight, Kelley said she can "live with it, knowing that I did what I needed to do in the 200 and praying that I figure it out before regionals. I don't want to be the reason anybody on that 4x400 misses out on a medal or a place on the podium."
Relatively quiet through the first two days, the Baylor men picked up big points in the shorter races and then capped off the meet by winning the 4x400 relay with a season-best time of 3:02.90 that would put them in the top 10 in the country.
After a strong opening leg by Aren Spencer, Arizona State transfer Malik Franklin avoided a collision that knocked Oklahoma State out of the race and came through in a sub-45-second time that gave the Bears the lead. A last-minute sub, Bailey Hashmi ran the third leg and gave anchor Tyler Honeyman a comfortable cushion as Baylor was able to beat the 3:03.71 time that BYU posted in the first of two heats.
"When I saw that BYU ran a 3:03, I knew from that moment that we were going to have to have a crazy PR," Honeyman said. "I looked at the time after the first 200, I was like, 'Oh wow, tit's time, here we go.' I hit the jets and came across as fast as I could."
In a repeat of the Big 12 Indoor 60-meter hurdles, Demario Prince was the runner-up behind Texas Tech's Malachi Snow with a school-record time of 13.14. A finalist in the two shorter sprints, Laurenz Colbert was eighth in the 100 in a season-best time of 10.22 and came back to finish second in the 200 with a career PR of 20.18.
Franklin added a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 45.63, while the 4x100 relay of Austen Diggs, Colbert, Ricquan Graham and Hashmi took fourth with a season PR of 39.38.
Next up for the Baylor men and women is a trip to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA West Prelims that begin May 27.
